Stop Worrying About Your Retirement

Stop Worrying About Your Retirement

Remember when your idea of retirement was sitting home and relaxing or traveling the world with your wonderful spouse and seeing all of those places that you only dreamed of before? Well, for many of us, the places we dreamed of will only be visited in our dreams. There is, however, the possibility that you can stop worrying about your retirement. You only have to read on and decide to be disciplined with your financial situation.

Look into the future of you going out one cold winter morning with bus fare in one hand and a grocery list in the other, realizing that your once almost ample paycheck has now dropped to a measly pension reminiscent of the funds provided to an employee of Ebeneezer Scrooge. Luckily, you were able to pay off your house before you retired, or that monthly check would barely keep a roof over your head, much less food in your mouth.

But wait, there is the question of what to do with the house. Are you going to keep it and be able to keep up with the upkeep in the coming years? Are you going to sell the house and move to a rental property so you don't have to worry about upkeep, property taxes, insurance, etc? If you plan on keeping the home, you had better work on keeping yourself fit and healthy. A recent study showed that 50% of retired seniors will have to sell the family home to help cover unexpected home care or medical costs.

You are not the only person in this boat. We, as a society, are all in this Titanic together. The reason is learned behavior. We are taught from both parents and peers that we work for money, not having money work for us. We are all taught to do well in school, excel in college, get that degree and go make money for someone else and their company. We are selling ourselves and our time to other people so they can make money work for them.

Don't get me wrong, this is how society works and that is a good thing. If everyone started their own company and worked for themselves, we would all be in competition with each other and have no one to help them make their business better. For many, however, this normÓ is not enough. You have goals and aspirations that you want to see come to fruition. It takes determination to venture out and start your own piece of the business world. Many people don't have the patience to get through the first few months, which are the hardest part in most cases.

A person has to change their mindset from poor pitiful me, to feeling and thinking like a business owner, one that has been in business for himself for quite some time and has the knowledge to get things done efficiently and correctly. Do you think someone like Oprah Winfrey was born rich? Do you think she backed down at the first sign of adversity or struggle? She made it farther than many do by an early point in her career, but do you think she was fulfilled sitting behind a desk doing a morning show on local Chicago TV? I think not. She had a goal in mind and she stuck to that goal, through many trials.

Most people don't realize that many of the world's richest people were not born that way. Some were even college drop-outs, and many have been virtually destitute at some point in their life. If you have the desire to break free from the mold that we are all falling into, you have to set your mind to become more like these people. Overcome adversity, don't be disheartened by the little things. Make a goal for yourself and keep your eyes on that goal until you reach it, then set another.

Once you have the right mindset, there is no stopping you from making your retirement what you want it to be. So stop worrying about your retirement, and start doing something about it.
